Friday Self-denial Group:

This is the last Sunday of the year for the Group and your new envelopes will be distributed. Proceeds from the past year have been shared between Fr. O'Donnell in Malawi and a programme to help the victims of the floods in Uganda. Anyone who is not a member of the Group and would like to make a donation to either cause, please contact Sandra, Christine or Margaret. Press and TV coverage on the plight of the people of Zimbabwe has prompted us to support a charity there next year. Further information in a couple of weeks, but in the meanwhile please consider how you might be able to help. Thank you - S. Brewester.

From Fr. Hugh:

Since my time helping in the chaplaincy at Ready Gaol, I have been supporting as best I can a young prisoner called Andy. He is now at Bullingdon Gaol, an adult prison and much tougher than Reading. Through it all Andy turned his life around, growing in self-knowledge, self-control, faith and the practice of daily prayer. He is now a fully practising Catholic, free from drugs and alcohol and taking all the vocational courses he can prior to his release. He has developed his artistic talent as a form of constructive self-expression. He hopes on release to work as an inner-city youth minister.
Christmas is especially difficult for prisoners and no less for Andy. His mother is too ill to visit him and he maintains contact with her by 'phone. However, out of his meagre prison earnings, he must pay for these 'phone calls as well as for his art supplies.
It would be a gracious act of Christmas charity if you could spare even just £1 to give him so that he can telephone his mother this Christmas and have a long chat with her. Perhaps he will also be able to obtain some art supplies. Any money collected will be pooled and sent to him as a surprise, in the name of the Douai Abbey Parish, in the form of a postal order which is the only way money can be received in prison. Just £25 would give him a good 'phone call with his mother and allow him to buy some paper, paint and charcoal for his art work. So any amount, however small, that you can spare will greatly assist him. If you care to donate, please give your contribution to Fr. Benedict, Fr. Hugh or send a cheque made payable to Douai Abbey Parish to the parish office. Please also remember him in your prayers.
Thank you.
