Participation in an approved marriage preparation programme is one of the requirements for getting married in the Catholic Church.

January 2012: Prayer Intentions of the Holy Father:
General intention: that the victims of natural disasters may receive the spiritual and material comfort they need to rebuild their lives.
Missionary Intention:
that the dedication of Christians to peace may bear witness to the name of Christ before all men and women of good will.
Catholic Internships:
The Catholic Bishops' Conference is offering eight internships for recently graduated Catholics. Five interns will be placed with Christian MPs at Westminster, two in Public Policy with CAFOD and CARITAS Social Action Network and one in a media internship at Archbishop's House, Westminster. All these will run from September 2012 to July 2013 and include accommodation and subsistence allowances. Full details available here. Gospel Study Group:
It is proposed to start a Gospel Study Group to be held at Douai Abbey once a month on a weekday or Saturday afternoon. Discussions would be guided by Fr. Gervase. If you are interested in joining please contact Kate Laker (01491 671186).
Friday Abstinence:
Please remember that your obligation to Friday penance can only be fulfilled by abstaining from meat or some other food if you do not usually eat meat.

Friday Self Denial Group:
Since 1966 the Friday Self Denial Group has tried to make every Friday a day of self denial. Money saved like this is collected and sent to a charity. This year we are supporting baby feeding stations in refugee camps around Khartoum, Sudan. New envelopes have arrived for distribution. If your circumstances have changed or you would like to join as a new member, please contact the Parish Office.

Parish Review:
So much goes on in our parish, some of it unnoticed or unrecorded, I thought it might be a good idea to have an annual review of the activities of the five churches. If you have responsibility for something that you would like to see mentioned, please email it to the Parish Office in Word format by the end of September (about 100 words only, please)
Contact the Elderly:
This charity is appealing for volunteers for its Reading group. Administration assistants, drivers and new hosts for Sunday afternoon tea parties for lonely people over 75 are always welcome. Contact Susan Hyland (0207 420 5811) for more information.
Apostleship of the Sea:
Do please take a few moments to view this BBC TV report on the plight of a crew currently stranded in a British port and the work of the Apostleship of the Sea to support them.

Catholic Youth Ministry in Reading:
The Catholic community in Reading wishes to appoint a Youth Ministry Leader to develop and co-ordinate proactively activities across several parishes in the area. The successful candidate will be a practising Catholic with qualifications and/or experience related to Youth Ministry. CAFOD Lent Fast Day:
This is not until early March but Parish donations to this fund will, this year, be doubled at no extra cost to parishioners. Under the UK Aid Match initiative, the UK government will match all Parish and individual donations towards CAFOD's Lent appeal, including funds raised for Fast Day. All donations made as a result of Lent fund raising activities, between mid-February and mid-May, will qualify.

Are you passionate about campaigning and development issues? Are you a good communicator and motivator? CAFOD in Portsmouth is looking for a volunteer Campaigns Coordinator to promote our campaign actions, support our campaign volunteers across the Diocese and to recruit new ones. Rosary Recycling:
The nuns at St. Cecilia's Abbey have a small rosary workshop where they turn old rosaries, even just bits of broken ones, into new rosaries for the missions. Please send any pieces they might be able to use to Mother Mary Charles OSB, St. Cecilia's Abbey, Ryde, Isle of Wight, PO33 1LH.
